Why I Chose Software Engineering…
I graduated as a psychology major and after my last semester, I decided to get a job in my field until I moved on to the next few steps. Along my path of pursuing being a psychologist, in 2020 I was working for social services as a counselor in a rehabilitation facility. I worked the overnight shift, so I had the whole day to dedicate my time to something else. I was doing some research online and I found a website that sparked my interest which led me to spend more hours doing research in the world of code. So, while I was working, I would use 3 hours out of my day to do coding exercises.
Due to Covid19, I ended up losing my job which forced me to reevaluate what I really wanted out of life and my career. I decided to put more time and effort into learning how to code because that was the one thing during this pandemic that was consistent. I taught myself how to code for 6 months. The reason I chose software engineering is because it allows me the freedom to create different solutions that utilizes my skill of thinking outside the box. Around September, I looked for more support and that’s when I found the Flatiron school. A school that would give me structure to be a successful future software engineer, so I applied and took a leap of faith. This decision to apply to Flatiron school is the best decision I have made for myself in a long time. Learning to be a software engineer allows me to express myself in a new way to help people in various ways and be a solution maker, in that I plan to create solutions to give back to my community.
